I am an enthusiastic amateur across an unreasonable number of pursuits — building valve amplifiers and speakers, playing guitar badly and the harp worse, working on cars and driving them on track, brewing tea gongfu, roasting and brewing coffee, taiji, straight razors, sharpening, and photography. I claim no mastery in any of them. Amateur comes from amare, and I’ll take it in that spirit.

The argument, roughly: a valve amp’s frequency response, a coffee roast profile, an engine’s torque curve and the grind on a chef’s knife are all the same kind of object. You are shaping a line, you can only see part of it at a time, and the interesting decisions are always at the ends.

In StarCraft a build order is the sequence you commit to before you know what the other player is doing. Wiring an amplifier is the same problem: solder the wrong thing first and you spend an hour with tweezers reaching past a transformer.
